| One of Australia’s most successful ready response services to suicide loss will be launched in SA Country North by Centacare Catholic Family Services Country SA & United Synergies’ National StandBy Response Service on Monday 21st October 2013 United Synergies is a not-for-profit organisation based on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. This program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health. Families and communities in Australia are often ill-prepared for the emotional and social impact that occurs following the suicide death of a friend, loved one or colleague. Suicide has a significant and dramatic effect often causing distress and concern across the whole community. The StandBy program offers a 24-hour coordinated crisis response to assist people bereaved by suicide, regardless of when or where the suicide occurred, by utilising existing emergency and community support mechanisms. Community groups, agencies and interested individuals are invited to attend the launch and learn about the StandBy approach and the role of local communities in supporting those bereaved by suicide. National StandBy Response Coordinator Jill Fisher says “Experience with the StandBy program has demonstrated that the provision of support to the bereaved at a time convenient to them is more effective when available and delivered from within their local community. Active participation and cooperation by a wide range of agencies such as ambulance, police, coronial services and community groups results in bereaved people accessing the right support at the right time and in the right place via a reliable, single point of contact.” The Launch will feature contributions from local community responders and information about supporting those affected by suicide loss. Local StandBy Manager, Anna Jacobs says “This is a significant social issue that we can address together to provide support and improve the wellbeing of people we know who are bereaved by suicide. We look forward to the opportunity to deliver this program in the SA Country North area and to how we as a community respond and recover from a suicide tragedy”. The Launch will be held at the Arid Lands Botanical Gardens, Stuart Hwy, Port Augusta SA 5700 from 9.30 am until 3.30 pm on Monday 21st October 2013. Lunch is provided. To attend, please contact Sarah King by phone on 8644 2020 or via email sking@centacarecdpp.org.au. For further information contact: Jill Fisher 0458 406 640 |

| A suicide prevention officer in Port Augusta says more education is needed to teach people how to cope with low points in their lives. Aaron Stewart from the family services provider Centacare says he’s hearing of many suicide attempts by local people who don’t necessarily have a mental illness. He says people are struggling to deal with day to day pressures and otherwise common events such as relationship breakdowns. Aaron Stewart: “It’s those sort of areas besides loss and grief and suffering from many forms of psychosis that really need attention and we can fix it at a local level if we just got the resources to do it and I think we’ve got to keep pushing.” |

| CENTACARE Catholic Family Services, Country SA launched their new booklet, Stop the Hurting, at their Ceduna offices on Wednesday, January 23. The booklet was produced in partnership with the Indigenous Coordination Centre Ceduna, and coordinated by Sarah King, Centacare Catholic Family Services Whyalla. 2006 Indigenous Woman of the Year Auntie Rose Hillman and Chelsea Lieberwirth of Centacare in Whyalla have translated sections of the booklet into the Pitjantjatjara language. \"Its a very good idea to have this connection between the Aboriginal community and the wider community, as its still an issue which affects both,\" she said. \"The Pitjantjatjara translation is great for the Aboriginal community to have because many of us fall straight back into our language when alarmed.\" Michelle Naylon, a domestic violence support worker with Centacare Catholic Family Services, Country SA, in Ceduna, designed some of the Aboriginal artwork in the booklet. Centacare Operations Manager – Homelessness, Sheila Purvis said domestic violence continues to be a big issue within the community. \"We only have to look around us, to see domestic and family violence is a big problem in Ceduna,\" she said. \"We hope the booklet will help to give people advice and information, to make choices which will keep them safe.\" Dr Peter Munn, CEO said, \"we need to provide women with all the resources we can to make good decisions given what they have often been through.\" Centacare are also looking to reach out to some of the more isolated communities like Yalata and Oak Valley, where domestic and family violence have also been reported. Centacare Catholic Family Services in Ceduna can offer advice, support, advocacy and crisis accommodation for people who are experiencing family or domestic violence.
