No Interest Loan Scheme

No Interest Loan Schemes (NILS) are community based programs set up to help people on low incomes to buy essential household items such as a washing machine or furniture. Many low incomes manage from week to week, but struggle to find money when they need to buy an expensive appliance.

NILS offer interest free loans of up to $1000 to approved applicants and can be used for things such as:

  • Whitegoods
  • Essential household items
  • Hot water services
  • Heating/cooling appliances
  • Medical equipment
  • Other items will be considered on a case by case basis

NILS cannot be used for the following:

  • Everyday living expenses
  • General vehicle expenses
  • Gas, electricity, water, or telephone bills
  • Rent arrears
  • Purchase of motor vehicle
  • Payment of debts
  • Consolidation of debts
  • Items in pawn broker or similar
  • Goods or services already purchased or contracted

Who can apply?

  • People who receive a pension, benefit and/or family payment from Centrelink or Veterans Affairs, or hold a current Health Care Card or live on a low income
  • People with a demonstrated ability to repay the loan within 12 - 18 months (this is approximately $25 – $30 per fortnight)
  • People who cannot access another means of affordable credit
  • People who are bankrupt are eligible to apply
